Job history:

  • 12 years experience in medical research laboratories.
  • 18 years experience in community education through the Cooperative Extension Service, CommunityHealth Council, and Coordinated Approach To Child Health (CATCH) with an extensive focus on nutrition, food safety, and health.

With experience in medical research, Lee Ann has an understanding of the value of research in establishing fact from fiction. There is a lot of misinformation out there today, but in Lee Ann's counseling work, she will use only that information that has been established by extensive research. She has also been trained in Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) which is a method of doing research within a community with the help and input of community members. In the 1990’s, Lee Ann made a career change to community education, providing her with extensive experience in group presentations for all ages. She has several ready-to-go presentations that can be provided upon request.

While Lee Ann considered for many years becoming a Registered Dietitian, she finally took that leap in 2009 and enrolled at New Mexico State University to complete the courses necessary to apply for a dietetic internship. During that process, Lee Ann learned that with a master’s in nutrition she could take the national Registered Dietitian exam and become a Licensed Nutritionist in New Mexico, as New Mexico regulations permit this. For more information about this, you may visit the New Mexico Nutrition and Dietetics Practice Board.

The normal path to becoming a Registered Dietitian is to complete a bachelor’s degree in nutrition, 1200 contact hours in a dietetic internship, and then take the national exam. Since Lee Ann had passed this exam, the only step left to complete was a dietetic internship. She completed this in December 2012, and is now a Registered Dietitian.

Lee Ann's current professional and civic organization memberships include the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American Society for Nutrition, New Mexico Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Alamogordo Sertoma Club, and the Otero County Extension Advisory Board. She has belonged to several other associations and organizations in the past and has held several leadership positions within these organizations. Past memberships and leadership positions have included president of the New Mexico Extension Association for Family and Consumer Sciences, chair of the Otero County DWI Planning Council, president of the Alamogordo Sertoma club, and several others. Lee Ann has also received state, regional and national awards related to her Extension Service work on nutrition and other topics related to health. Additionally, Lee Ann has several professional publications in peer reviewed journals, as well as an extensive bibliography of other publications. A full list of these is available upon request.
